Victims of the dreadful tragedy

“Life is just a dream on the way to death.” –Mia Kirshner

The word ‘earthquake’ is defined as: shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth resulting from underground movement along a fault plane or from volcanic activity.

This definition can only give the literal meaning of the word, but it cannot define the devastation that an earthquake can cause, not only to the region but also to the people – the individuals -- who have lost their homes, members of their families or their friends!

The worst earthquake in the last 100 years has hit South Asia, and the devastation is horrendous! The extent of this natural catastrophe was on such a large scale that it has overshadowed the huge loss of lives, which now appear as mere statistical data. The death toll is rising day by day, and the pictures of misery that one sees in the newspapers or TV are extremely distressing. The large number of fatalities tend to shift our focus from the disastrous event itself without really giving an accurate description of how much individuals must have suffered and the grief of those who were lucky enough to survive, but found their dear ones buried alive under the rubble crying out for help, or dying and they were helpless to save them . Bad weather is hampering aid and relief efforts and it is reproted that rescue teams have still not managed to reach the remote areas. Therefore a majority of people, who did survive the earthquake died from injuries afterwards Those who survived were left without any shelter in the harsh weather, trying to live through the cold of the night in front of the ruins of their pulverized homes … Homes, which were full of love, energy and warmth just a few minutes before the great calamity struck the region. Now these homes are nothing but rubble and tormented screams can be heard in place of jovial laughter that once echoed in these valleys. Everyone knows that there is no guarantee of life … you never know when the angel of death will come and grab you, still nobody is ready to face death. This natural catastrophe has been an eye-opener to many who took life for granted; it has made the whole nation realise that it only takes a moment to lose your life and family. One cannot even imagine the agony and misery of the victims, who have survived this earthquake but have lost members of their family and homes. All these people are just like us. They feel pain the same way we do and we could've been in their place just as easily. Most of them have lost everything including hope!

The whole nation shares the grief of their fellow countrymen who have been the victims of this devastating tragedy, and we must do everything in our power to help these hapless people – support the victims, help them by donating as much as one can. The victims should not lose hope in this hard time because a survivor is one who faces the world with courage at all times.

Life is mostly froth and bubble,
Two things stand like stone,
Kindness in another's trouble,
Courage in your own.
- Adam Lindsay Gordon

Pakistan stands united to face this turbulent time, and by the will of God, we shall remain strong. May Allah have mercy on the souls of the victims and their families, Amen.
